Opossum
The opossum is quite a unique animal. It is our
version of the kangaroo just not as cute. Opossums are marsupials,
which mean the females carry their young in a pouch. The can have 12
to 13 young that they carry and feed for quite a while after birth.
Opossums also have a prehensile tail similar to that of a monkey.
They can use this to hold onto things or hang. Their name (to play
possum) represents a defense tactic in which they play dead to avoid
attack. They look like very large rats with thin whitish gray fur
and have a strong musty odor to them. They average 8-12 lbs and are
approximately 2 feet long.
Opossums are omnivores and will eat almost anything, including
garbage. They are opportunistic in that they will occupy already
existing dens left by another animal. Opossums climb very well but
move very slow. They enjoy living under sheds, decks, or crawl
spaces.
Opossums are nocturnal animals that very rarely get sick but have an
amazingly short lifespan (approx 3 years). Opossums create problems
by leaving droppings on decks and walkways, by stealing food,
knocking over garbage cans, carrying parasites, and having dens and
burrows on your property.
